Abercrombie

Pros:

  • Slight stretch in fabric offers more comfort than your ordinary jeans
  • Authentic vintage look (especially the distressed styles)
  • Abercrombie offers a wider range of colors and styles to choose from, especially in comparison to other brands we’ve reviewed

Cons:

  • Run a bit big, per reviews and testing

Abercrombie makes jean shopping exceptionally easy. The brand offers a ranking system so shoppers can see exactly where each pair falls on the stretch, fabric weight, and rise height scales. The 90s Relaxed High Rise Jeans are a natural best-seller, known for their authentic, vintage look, raw hem, and slight stretch for all-day comfort. Plus, each style can be tailored to your waist and height separately for a perfect fit.

Editor’s Note: “I love the ability to customize your jeans at Abercrombie. I went with the ‘short’ option and finally felt like my shoes were still visible with these jeans. They hit perfectly right at the ankle. I don’t typically go for stretch denim, but I wanted to see what these were all about, and I can attest to the fact that they do mold to my body much better than most of my jeans. They’re also easy to sit in, which is a major plus if you plan to wear these jeans while working or lounging.”

Lee

Pros

  • Available in misses, petite, and regular
  • Not too tight or too baggy
  • Works on a variety of body types

Everybody knows the jeans from Lee, and this pair are sure to be a favorite if you like a classic look. They’re relaxed but not too relaxed, giving them a worn-in but tailored shape that works well with tees or a cami and blazer. Design-wise, there’s a lot to be impressed with. Made from a cotton-poly blend, the back pockets are higher on the bum, giving the area a lifted appearance. One happy reviewer said they were the “best jeans” she’s ever worn, while another said they were the only denim that fit her “perfectly, each and every time.”

Madewell

Pros

  • Comfort stretch
  • Available in three colors
  • Soft material

Not feeling any of your LBDs? Grab a pair of black jeans instead. This pair from Madewell comes in petite, plus, standard, as well as tall. Their wide-legs makes them as comfortable as dress slacks, and they look good with chunky loafers, boots or some funky mules. Want to see them in another color? You can! Heathcote Wash and Caronia Wash to be exact, and both are available at Madewell.

A person wearing blue jeans
Amazon

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly
  • Unique, playful fringe
  • The cropped style is ideal for Petites

Cons:

  • Might be less durable than some other brands (more polyester, less cotton)

For a more playful look, consider this pair of high-waisted, cropped jeans by Garment. They’re designed with a raw hem, short fringe, and distressed knees for a slightly dramatic flair that adds some dimension to any look. Plus, they’re under $50, which earns major points in our books. Reviewers say they attract many compliments. But, if a distressed look isn’t for you — there’s always the Grapent Wide-Leg Jeans, which offer a more refined look for business-casual appearances.

Size: S-XXL | Inseam: 27″ | Material: 70% Cotton, 28.5% Polyester, 1.5% Elastane | Colors: 6 |

A woman wearing blue Levi's jeans
Amazon

Pros:

  • Most people agree they fit true to size-wise, but the inseam is a bit longer for Petites
  • The bootcut silhouette is easy to style with different types of shoes
  • Low-waist is very relaxed and comfortable (no pinching at the hips)

Cons:

  • More casual look, not a great option for dressy occasions

If a simple, sleek low-rise is what you’re after, Levi’s Low Pro Straight jeans are probably the perfect fit. These jeans have a roundish bootcut silhouette at the bottom, a relaxed fit through the hip, and a slightly V-shaped waist to accentuate the hips. Many reviewers agree that the Low Pros are universally flattering, and they actually fit true to size.

Miska Salemann

Editor’s Note: “I practically live in my Levi’s. These might not be the jeans to wear to work or a business-casual dinner, but they’re the perfect casual pair for everyday errands and wandering around the city. The low-rise is very much on-trend, and comfortable (easier to breathe in for that matter), and the cut looks great with any top you pair them with. I’m 5’3 and found that the length is a bit long on me, so I got them hemmed — worth it.”

Not sold on straight legs? For a phenomenal bootcut option, we suggest the Levi’s Women’s Classic Bootcut Jeans.

Best Jeans for Curvy Women: AE Dream Super High-Waisted Jegging

Best Jeans for Women": a woman wearing blue jeans.
American Eagle

Pros

  • Ultra stretchy denim
  • Lifts the bum area
  • Smooth pocket design for a more streamlined fit

Cons

  • Only available in one color

This pair of jeans are a favorite of one of our Commerce Writer’s at Decider and we can’t blame her. Between their four-way stretch and curve hugging design, they have an almost magical way of accentuating one’s attributes while distracting from areas we may want to visually minimize. Still not convinced? Here’s what Angela Tricarico had to say about them”

Editor’s Note: “As a short girl (5’1”) who also happens to be plus size, shopping for jeans is hard, and when I find something I like, I cling to it,” she says. “That’s what happened with American Eagle’s Super High-Waisted Jeggings, which I’ve been buying and wearing since at least 2019, maybe even longer. The short length is perfect for my height, hitting right at my ankle. They’re tight where they’re supposed to be and never loose in the calf the way I’ve found some can be when you start shopping plus size. Most importantly, they’re comfortable enough to spend all day in, from commuting, to working, to nights out.”

A woman in a pair of blue jeans and a white shirt.
Amazon

Pros:

  • Great for apple shapes, as well as pear shapes
  • Available in more than a dozen colors and washes
  • Shapes and holds

Cons:

  • May need to size down if you’re in between sizes

If you’re a fan of Wit & Wisdom denim, you need to check out its sister company Democracy. Its absolution line has strategically placed panels to give a more streamlined look, while the pockets are designed to make your rear look tighter and higher. This specific pair is a favorite of more than 4,000 shoppers on Amazon, one declaring them her “favorite jeans,” while another wrote that they “fit like a glove.” And because of how they’re made, they work regardless if you’re apple shaped, pear shaped or something in between.

Revolve

Pros

  • Durable
  • Made from 100% cotton
  • Worn-in vintage look

Cons

  • Non-stretch denim may not be as comfortable for those with curves

Fading and whisking combined with a heavier weight denim make these AGOLDE jeans a must for anyone who yearns for the 90s return. They look good with everything: heels, boots, dare we say even Birkenstocks?

Editor’s Note: “Love all AGOLDE — the pinch waist style specifically is super flattering,” noted Salemann. “And with an 29.25 inseam, they hit perfectly for anyone under 5’5. I’d say that these jeans are on the stiffer side (less stretch), which I really like but it’s not for everyone!”

Size: 23-34 | Inseam: 29.25″ | Material: 100% regenerative cotton | Colors: 1 |

Best Jeans for Women: a pair of blue jeans.
Abercrombie & Fitch

Pros

  • A 4.5 rating on A&F, and more than 3,000 reviews
  • Available in 20 plus colors and multiple lengths
  • Emphasizes waist but relaxed in the thigh area

Regardless of your height or size, there’s a good chance these A&F jeans will become a weekly staple. Hundreds of women love their fit, including Meaghan Roche, our Senior Commerce SEO Manager.

Editor’s Note: “I own multiple washes of Abercrombie’s Ultra High Rise 90s Straight Jean because they are the perfect everyday jeans,” she says. “They’re made with quality vintage denim, plus have enough stretch to be comfortable without compromising or losing their shape. The straight style is flattering on most body types and they’re versatile enough wear with anything from sneakers to Uggs to heels.” She also recommends not to sleep on Abercrombie’s Curve Love collection.” Trust us, we won’t!

A woman wearing grey jeans and a grey shirt
TopShop

Pros:

  • Great value, especially for the high-quality denim
  • Very versatile straight-leg style (can be dressed up and down, and worn many ways)
  • The light-wash color is even brighter than the picture shows

Cons:

  • Button fly can be a bit difficult to button up
  • Runs small (order a size up)

If you’re looking for something between carefree casual and street-style cool, this pair by Topshop is a great contender. The Kort jeans have a relaxed fit, roomy, straight legs, and are constructed with non-stretch denim in an evenly faded light wash. They have a bit of a vintage edge that looks great with a pair of chunky sneakers in the summer.

Editor’s Note: “One of my best friends introduced me to Topshop denim in High School, and I’ve been thoroughly impressed with how well these jeans have held up over the years — especially considering they’re under $60. A straight leg is so simple, and easy to style, which makes this jean an easy go-to for many occasions. The light-wash fade looks much brighter in person, and the material is on the stiffer side, which means it also keeps its shape super well and never slouches. If you like non-stretch denim, this is a great style for you.”

A woman in jeans and a tee shirt.
Paige

Pros:

  • The feel of vintage denim combined with comfortable stretch
  • Raw hem detail

Cons:

  • Only available in one color

If you like the durability of a vintage jean but also love the flexibility of today’s denim, we suggest giving this pair from Paige a try. They have the look and feel of something you’d score in a high-end but trendy boutique back in the day but have a kiss of spandex, making them easier to break in. The distressed hem adds to their authentic look, while the back pockets are positioned just high enough to make the bum look c’est magnifique. Pair with a black tank and sandals, and you have the perfect OOTD.

A woman in grey jeans and a white shirt.
Neiman Marcus

Pros

  • High-rise, relaxed fit
  • Great for taller women
  • High-quality feel, and made of 100% cotton

“My favorite jeans in the world, ever are the Yves Saint Laurent v-waist high rise jeans,” says Commerce Writer Kendall Cornish. “They’re immaculately designed, a worn-in kind of comfortable, and high enough quality for me to wear every day without them changing shape. They’re the ultimate investment.”

Editor’s Note: “The size 27 has a 36 inseam, making this a great option for those who have extra long gams. The also feature a five button fly, and we love the way the V-waist cut emphasizes the smallest part of the waist. Personally, we’d pair with a bodysuit and high heel boots, but we could see these working for a variety of looks as well.”

Levi

Pros

  • Available in 17 different colors on Amazon
  • More than 7,000 ratings on Amazon
  • A classic shape that can be styled into a variety of looks

Cons

  • No stretch
  • Shorter inseam

Every woman needs at least one pair (two, if we’re being honest) of jeans that work for the office but easily transitions for play. Our pick is the Levi’s Ribcage Straight Ankle Women’s Jeans. They sit at the waist, and have a tailored look but have just a smidge of wiggle room for comfort. We like wearing them with boots and a tucked-in baggy sweater. However, they also work with a blouse or T-shirt and blazer. More than 5,000 happy customers on Amazon gave them a five-star rating.

Walmart

Pros:

  • Budget-friendly option
  • Ideal for women with curves
  • Many wash color options

Cons:

  • A bit on the longer side (ideal for taller women)

Designed by fashion legend Sophia Vergara herself, these stunning bootcut jeans are made with a comfortable stretch design that hugs every curve and contours the body for an incredible lengthening effect. The silhouette features generous whickers for a well-worn look and is available in quite a few washes. They are a bit on the long side — which makes them a popular choice for taller women.

Size: 0-20 | Inseam: 32.5″ | Material: 66% Cotton, 28% Polyester, 4% Other Fiber, 2% Spandex | Colors: 8 |

A woman with her arms crossed
Aritzia

Pros:

  • Very flattering around the waist and thighs
  • Large side pockets to easily carry all the essentials
  • Core collection and limited edition styles drop regularly

Cons:

  • The cotton does stretch a bit wear-after-wear
  • A little long for petite girls

Everyone wants a pair of Farrahs, and we can understand why. These ultra-flattering jeans are made for business, but the cargo style adds a more casual flair. They’re inspired by the 70’s actress herself and feature a classic fit, wide leg, and side spade cargo pockets. The organic Italian cotton denim materials are supposed to get better and better with every wash.

Editor’s note: “I tried to resist the Farrah temptation as long as I could. It seemed like all of my friends had a pair of these cargo jeans, and I didn’t want to be too cliche. But, all my fears dissipated as soon as I tried them on. To say they live up to the hype is an understatement. The Farrah is one of the most flattering jeans I’ve tried — especially for girls with hips. They have a slim fit at the waist but fall down the leg so easily. I honestly feel like I could run a marathon in these. Not to mention the pockets — it’s so convenient to have pockets you can actually fit your phone in.”

Best Jeans for Women - a woman in a black shirt and jeans.
Good American

Pros:

  • Mid-rise cut
  • Sculpting compression throughout
  • Retains shape

Cons:

  • Only available in one wash

We salute Good American for its body-inclusive sizing, as well as for its wide variety of denim. For ladies sizes 15 plus and up, we highly recommend the Good Legs Straight Light Compression Jeans. They’re made with mainly common, but also have an abundance of stretch (about 8%), so you can walk, sit and bend without having to adjust a thing. True to the brand’s signature design, they have a gap-proof waist, too, and can be dressed up with a heel or dressed down with a pair of Doc Martin dupes.

Size: 00-30 Plus | Inseam: 27.5″ | Material: 7.4% Cotton, 25% Recycled Cotton, 5.8% Elastane-P, 1.8% Elastane | Colors: 3 |

Spanx

Pros:

  • Slimming design
  • No zipper or buttons
  • Available in regular, tall and petite

We love that wide legs are finally back in style, especially when they have contouring abilities. These Spanx jeans feature a hidden core technology that smooths the midsection and lifts the butt. They’re also soft, offer high-rise coverage and are in a pull-on style.

Size: 00-30 plus | Inseam: 30″-34″ | Material:  91% Cotton, 7% Polyester, 2% Lycra Elastane. Lining: 70% Polyester, 30% Cotton | Colors: 3 |

NYDJ

Pros:

  • Made of eco-friendly materials
  • Slimming
  • Stretchy

If comfort is king of your closet, we highly recommend going with the jeans from NYDJ. They’re stretchy, stylish, and offer lots of flexibility. The Marilyn Straight Jeans is one of our favorites. They’re designed to elongate the body, so you can even skip the heels if you want. Slimming panels and a criss-cross design enhance curves, while the buttery materials feels almost as good as a pair of loose sweats.

Size: 00-18 | Inseam: 32″ | Material: 90% Cotton, 8% Elastomultiester, 2% Lycra Elastane | Colors: 4 |

Free People

Pros:

  • Lots of color options
  • Soft, velvety feel
  • High rise with stretch fabrication

If you like anything with a vintage bohemian aesthetic, you’re probably already a fan of Free People. They make gorgeous clothing for the free spirit and these corduroy jeans are no exception. We love how subtle the flare is and the way they sit high on the waist. They don’t have any back pockets, which we’re not a fan of. However, we’re willing to overlook that, especially since these jeans that work great for taller ladies come in nine colors, including scarlet and an icy grey called Love Stone. “I’ve always had a hard time finding flare jeans that are long enough for me,” says one happy reviewer who’s 5 feet 11 inches. “I finally found them! They actually touch the floor when I wear them.”

A woman in a blue jacket and Paige jeans
Paige

Pros:

  • Smooth and wrinkle-free material, great for workwear
  • Extremely soft and stretchy
  • Bootcut style lengthens the legs

If dark denim has been calling, Paige Genevieve Flare Jean’s could be your answer. These bootcut flare jeans have an extreme lengthening effect and pitch-black tone, making them a treat for petites. Plus, they’re also almost as comfortable as leggings. The addition of butter-soft spandex provides just enough stretch to make all your daily activities a bit more comfortable.

Editor’s Note: “It’s pretty difficult to find a pair of jeans suitable for the corporate world. Lighter washes seem too casual, and holes should typically be avoided. This pair from Paige is one of the only jeans I feel presentable in, and much of that has to do with the fact that I’ve hardly ever seen them wrinkle. They’re smooth, elegant, and look like serious work pants. The bootcut style creates a lengthening and slimming effect, and they pair perfectly with a pair of boots or close-toed heels in the fall.”

J.Crew

Pros:

  • Durable
  • Available in short, medium, and long
  • Lots of color options

Is there a more class jean brand than Levi’s? We’re not sure, but our Updates Editor, Holly Coley, loves its 311 Shaping Skinny Jeans.

Editor’s note: “I know a lot of people are happy that skinny jeans are no longer trending like they were before, but I still think everyone needs a pair or two in their closet,” she says. “These have been one of my mine. I’ve worn them while cleaning, out with friends, on long walks — almost everywhere. I’ve had them for more than a year and they’ve still maintained their shape and haven’t frayed or anything. Personally, I wouldn’t call them ‘shaping’ since they’re not as flexible as some of the other pieces of denim I own. However, they definitely mold to the body.”

Pros:

  • Bestseller
  • Slight fading in front to make them look gently worn in
  • Relaxed not baggy fit

Cons:

  • Only available in one color

For lazy days when you’re not in the mood for something tight, go for a relaxed boyfriend jean. We like this pair Rag & Bone. Slightly slouchy, they offer the perfect amount of movement without going into baggy jeans territory. Wear with a tucked in tee and your favorite sneakers on your days off. For the office, go with a sweater or a blouse and blazer. “Love these jeans,” said one reviewer who purchased the jeans on Neiman Marcus. “Great relaxed fit, looks great with booties [or] stilettos. More than I usually spend on jeans but worth it!”

A woman dressed in a grey tank top and black pants
Reformation

Pros:

  • The unique cut at the bottom extends the leg (especially, looks great with heels)
  • An array of colors (silver button style adds a unique pop to dress-up outfits)
  • The fabric is exceptionally soft yet holds an incredible shape and does not wrinkle

Cons:

  • May run a size big, per the editor’s review
  • No stretch (personal preference)

Reformation’s Cary High Rise Slouchy Straight Leg Jeans are the perfect jeans for someone who can’t decide between style and comfort. These offer both. They’re fitted throughout with a relaxed leg and come in a variety of colorways. For a standout style, we recommend the Vana Vented Studded silhouette. The dark wash contrasts with a silver button trim for a truly unique look, ideal for a night out.

Editor’s Note: “I’ve always admired Reformation jeans, but this pair was my first experience with the brand and I couldn’t be more impressed. The material is much softer than you’d expect, but still holds its shape wonderfully and does not wrinkle. I have so many pairs of basic jeans, and the silver button detailing on these makes for an easy, low-effort elevated look. You could pair it with a plain T-shirt and still get compliments.”

Pros:

  • Multiple pockets
  • High-waist
  • A smidge of stretch

These skinny jeans aren’t as designer as some would love, but they’re still attention grabbers! Made from a blend of cotton and 3% spandex, they go with a variety of tops and look good with sneakers, heels or knee-high boots. “Love these,” said one happy Target customer. ” And they do not shrink when you wash or dry them. Stretchy and good for curves and tucks everything in as well.”

Editor’s Note: Our Social Media Senior Manager Julia Remillard loves the jeans from Universal Threads, because “they’re good quality but affordable,” and we agree with her!

Pros:

  • Universally flattering dark wash
  • Works for dressy and causal affairs

Cons:

We like all the flare jeans from Frame. However, if we had to pick just one pair to spend our days in, we’d go with the Frame Le High Easy High-Rise Flare Jeans. The flares are a smidge wider than others and we like that vintage-inspired drama! Also, Frame makes some of the best designer jeans for women, so you know we have to add these to our cart. They have slight distressing in the front, are soft and look fantastic with a heel, wedge or even a block heeled boot.

How we tested

The best way to find out if a pair of jeans is worth the buy is to try them on yourself. Our editors have tested some of the most popular jean styles from top brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Lee, Target, Aritzia, Paige, Denim Forum, and more. While evaluating each style, we’ve kept in mind three main criteria: style, comfort, and durability. These were no single try-on sessions — we’ve worn these pants all around the city, into work, out to dinner, and more.

Style

When it comes to jeans the options are endless. Low-rise or high-rise. Flare or straight. Stretch or rigid. Light or dark wash. We understand that everyone has their taste when it comes to style, but we’ve been sure to include our notes on whether the jeans we’ve tested hold true to their descriptions and have also added suggestions for styling each pair based on their material, color, and construction.

Comfort

Comfort is paramount with jeans. Can you sit down without wiggling? Walk fast enough to catch a subway? While reviewing these denim styles, we considered whether they fit true to size, or ran a bit large or small. We’ve also evaluated the softness and stretchiness (or stiffness) and broke down the specific materials used for each pair, so you know exactly what you’re buying.

Durability

Jeans are not cheap. While there are some budget-friendly options available, most quality jeans cost between $50 and $100. When investing in a new pair, it’s important to consider how long they will last, how well the material holds its shape over time, and whether the color remains as bright as it was when you bought the jeans. We’ve shared our thoughts on the longevity of each style we tested, and have some recommendations for the best way to keep them looking and feeling great year after year.

Buyers Guide

How do you find jeans that fit you?

“Know your measurements — especially waist, hip, and inseam,” Gold advises. “Most brands — like Lee — have size charts where you can compare your measurements to their sizing.

Look how the jean fits the model and what size she is wearing. Consider how you want the jeans to fit and what makes you feel confident; more fitted [or] looser.

If you’re out in the wild buying jeans, here’s a hack I recently discovered:

As you can see, wrapping the waist of your denim around your neck is a quick and easy way to know if a pair of jeans will fit without trying them on.

What type of jeans are best for women?

“Straight jeans and bootcut are timeless styles,” says Gold.

“For a universal option, look for a classic or regular fitting jean in a mid-rise with a straight leg or bootcut. These styles sit at the waist, hug the hips, and then skim the thighs. Both leg openings also offer lots of options to pair with shoes from ballet flats to sneakers to boots. A slim straight is particularly flattering, especially if you are hesitant to ditch your skinny jeans for a fuller leg.”

What are the best types of denim?

Gold encouraged shoppers to consider the amount of stretch and/or synthetic fibers in the fabric they choose.

“Do you want a 100% cotton or something that has more stretch in it? Many brands will show the percentage of cotton and other materials in product descriptions. Also, read the product reviews online.”

What is a jean rise?

You’ve probably already heard of low-rise and high-rise jeans and understand the visual difference between them. Structurally, the “rise” refers to the length between the crotch seam and the waistband.

Each pair of jeans has two rises, a front rise and a back rise. The rise affects the way jeans look and feel.

A high-rise pair of jeans has a longer rise, which may sit higher over your hips around your waist. A low-rise pair of jeans will set lower towards the hips, and a mid-rise pair will be somewhere in the middle.

What is a jean inseam?

“The inseam tells you the length of the jean,” Gold explains. “That’s helpful as it enables you to envision it on you. Does the jean stop above or at the ankle, at your arch of the foot or on the floor?”

Considering the footwear you’ll be wearing with a pair of jeans is another thing that Gold suggests. It will impact the inseam to go for.

“As a general rule, 29” inseam is considered ankle length jean on average height consumers,” explains Gold. “A tailor can help with all of your measurements. Or, find your favorite pair of jeans and use a tape measure to measure the inside seam from the crotch to the hem.”

How should you wash your jeans?

Most denim is durable enough to be worn a few times without regular washing. Some experts say that the less you wash your jeans, the longer they will last. Lee Jeans, for example, suggests washing once or twice a month.

“We advise washing jeans as seldom as possible to maintain fit, shape, and color,” the brand recommends. “Plan to wash your denim no more than once or twice a month, or after five to 10 wears.”

When it comes to how you wash your jeans, the instructions vary from brand to brand and style to style. However, most brands advise machine washing on cold to preserve the size of the jeans, and avoid shrinkage, and fading.

“Our preferred method for cleaning denim is hand washing in the tub using cold water and a mild detergent,” it says on the website.

“Denim is a sturdy, absorbent, and forgiving material, but it loses integrity with every cleaning. Hand washing is the gentlest way to wash your jeans and keep them in good condition over time.”
