They say that behind “every great man is a great woman”, well I like to say “beside every great man, is an even greater, well-dressed woman”.

WASHINGTON — The Inauguration was created centuries ago as a way for the people of the United States to gather and celebrate a new president being sworn into office. On the other side, it was a time for everyone to dawn their winter best and sparkle like the stars in the D.C. night sky. But, no one dared outshine the First Ladies, who stood by the sides of their husbands dressed in the most impeccable furs, hats, and designer garments.

They say that behind “every great man is a great woman”, well I like to say “beside every great man, is an even greater, well-dressed woman”. So let’s take this time out to take a look back at some of the previous fashions strutted by some of our former First Ladies.

2021: Dr. Jill Biden

First Lady Jill Biden wore a matching turquoise overcoat and dress by a small New York City brand, Markarian. Coming off the heels of a global pandemic, she opted to wear a matching turquoise face mask.

2017: Melania Trump

Melania Trump wore a cashmere dress with a matching bolero jacket in a powder blue hue by Ralph Lauren. Many say this ensemble pays homage to the late Jackie Kennedy another former First Lady.

2013: Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama showed she was true to this, not new to this during Pres. Obama’s second Presidential Inauguration in 2013 when she wore a navy silk checkered dress and matching overcoat by designer Thom Browne.

2009: Michelle Obama

2005: Laura Bush

Laura Bush opted for a white overcoat by one of her favorite designers, Oscar de la Renta for President. George W. Bush’s second inauguration.

2001: Laura Bush

Laura Bush and the then President-elect posed outside of the White House with Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton ahead of Bush’s Inauguration. Laura Bush blushing in blue wore an overcoat with black lapels and a matching dress by Texas designer, Michael Faircloth.

1997: Hillary Clinton

During Bill Clinton’s second Inauguration Sen. Hillary Clinton dawned what some would call a “bubble-gum pink” colored coat by Oscar de la Renta.

1989: Barbara Bush

1985: Nancy Reagan

There’s “Valentino Red”, then there’s “Reagan Red” a term coined for Nancy’s famous red outfits. But like a true fashion icon, Nancy switched it up for Ronald Reagan’s second Inauguration. The former first lady wore a cobalt blue dress with military-style buttons and a matching pillbox hat.

1981: Nancy Reagan

A trendsetter before her time, Nancy Reagan was the lady in red for Ronald Reagan’s Inauguration in 1981 coining the term “Reagan Red”.

1977: Rosalynn Carter

Rosalynn Carter sported a turquoise coat with a matching dress by designer Dominic Rompollo, paired with brown leather knee-high boots and gloves.

1973: Pat Nixon

While the photo is in black and white sources say Pat Nixon wore a blue coat with a brown fur collar trim. In previous inaugurations, it was standard for the First Lady to dawn a fur mink to brace themselves against the harsh January D.C. weather.

1961: Jacqueline Kennedy

Fashion enthusiasts around the nation know the “Jackie Kennedy” look. Often described as classic silhouettes, tailored, and bold fabrics. When John F. Kennedy was sworn in as President, Jacqueline wore an Oleg Cassini coat with big bold buttons, a pillbox hat by Halston, and accessorized the ensemble with a fur muff.
