Cynthia Erivo is not one to shy away from bold fashion, and for ESSENCE’s Black Women in Hollywood Awards, she took that ethos and ran with it—straight into the theatrical world of Maison Margiela Artisanal.

Continuing to prove why she’s one of Hollywood’s most daring dressers, the Wicked star served up a look that was part high fashion, part Broadway villain, and entirely Cynthia.

We’ve been seeing a lot more of Maison Margiela’s Artisanal collections on the red carpet lately, and Cynthia’s black tulle jacket—layered over a matching bustier dress, a black rubber bra, and tulle knickers from the Co-Ed Autumn/Winter 2022 collection—felt like a dramatic nod to her character Elphaba, as well as being unapologetically bold, and deeply in her wheelhouse.

This is a look that oozes avant-garde energy, but I can’t help but think that this would have been a better fit for her Wicked Sydney premiere, where she opted for Louis Vuitton in what I personally felt was her weakest moment of the tour.

The details? Still holding strong. Her nails, done in collaboration with OPI which we first saw at the NAACP Image Awards, remain untouched—though I fully expect a fresh set for the Oscars.

Christian Louboutin x Maison Margiela Loubiella pumps completed her look in glossy, patent perfection, while a selection of jewels (including her signature nose ring) added a personal touch.
