MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – The Show Miami opens March 17 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and students at the Miami Fashion Institute at Miami Dade College are looking forward to it.

Katarina Hansell-Bakic, a co-founder of The Show Miami, said her mission is to create “a fashion ecosystem in Miami” so that students don’t need to move to New York or Los Angeles anymore.

Alicia Perez, a student at MFI MDC, was researching sustainability and upcycling.

“What we do right now is buy, wear, throw away,” Perez said. “Instead of throwing it away, we find a new way to use it — just being creative with what we have.”

Ivan Herjavc, a co-founder of The Show Miami, also wants to support students like Hannah Zimmett, of the MFI’s design program, who are interested in learning about the business side of fashion.

“We work with different brands and designers. The largest is Perry Ellis, which is the largest employer in Miami in the fashion industry,” Herjavc said.

James First Class, of Sprayground, believes in their mission. He moved to Miami from NYC.

“The guys that were the moguls in those cities now live in Miami, so now the kids don’t have to run out to New York to get the jobs or to LA, because we have the businesses here and we are hiring internally inside Miami,” he said.

The trade show runs from 4 to 8 p.m., March 17-19, at 1901 Convention Center Drive. A three-day pass is $55 on Eventbrite. For more information, visit this page.
