In the fashion history books, 2024 will be remembered as the year of the changing of the guard (Chanel! Celine! Bottega Veneta!), the birth of Brat green, the triumphant return of boho and Zendaya dressing as a high-fashion robot on the red carpet. However, if in 20 years you were to reference the styling mood in 2024 and dress like a Vogue editor, what are the outfit formulas that will define this moment?
When it comes to cult items, we shopped for baggy jeans, barn jackets, lots of suede, retro trainers and sporty rugby tops and track jackets. There was a youthful, playful energy that was a direct rebellion against the “quiet luxury” movement, with messy bags decorated with charms and colourful trinkets, jelly shoes worn by grown ups (thanks to The Row) and the return of slogan T-shirts (thanks to Loewe’s Challengers “I Told Ya” tee). However, when it comes to street style, the best outfits are not those designed for peacocking purposes. As Vogue’s Alice Newbold wrote earlier this year, when dissecting the spring/summer 2025 season: “The best street style is not the sheerest. It does not involve green hair. Nor matching head to toe with a fellow fashion type. It is quiet, considered, curated – boring, even.”
This attitude is reflected in the below street style looks, that we are crowning the best outfit formulas of 2024. Highlights include Sienna Miller at Paris Fashion Week in February in a white tiered slip dress, platform clogs and an oversized leather jacket, a full look from Chemena Kamali’s new boho for Chloé – it was an outfit that everyone in London was wearing come May. Another very 2024 look is wide-leg jeans paired with a striped rugby shirt and well-worn leather boat shoes – a styling directive straight from Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2024 show.
From barn jackets and baggy jeans, to jorts and leather coats, to the return of “skousers”, keep scrolling for nine outfit formulas that we loved this year – and have no intention of letting go for 2025.
